Glendale Alumni Leadership Meeting

We have six classes of alumni at our Glendale Campus. Our first medical and PA students graduated in 2000 and our first pharmacy class in 2001. Even though they are young and just starting out in their professions, it is amazing to me how committed many of them are to staying in touch with their alma mater. We held a meeting of our Glendale Alumni Leadership at Oscar Taylor's Grill in Phoenix last evening. Fifteen alumni from all of our programs came out for dinner and a discussion about recent and upcoming alumni events. Mike Harmon, a graduate of our Health Professions Education Program and a health educator for AirEvac, led the meeting. Several of our alumni senators, including Dr. Kevin Borg of CPG and Drs. Jennifer Wild and Helene Labonte of AZCOM, helped facilitate the various topics. We all listened to a panel of six current students from each college who talked about their academic experiences and ways that the alumni can help mentor them. It was a great discussion, and we have some wonderful ideas for finding ways for our alumni to come back to campus and talk to current students, perhaps providing advice about their clinical rotations, tips on interviewing for residencies and jobs, and other health-related topics. We also talked about interdisciplinary education, and how important it was for the alumni to have classes with and build relationships with students in the other colleges. As a university administrator, it is truly exciting for me to hear from our young alumni and brainstorm with them ways they can stay connected and help the classes of students who will come after them. They make MWU proud.
