Today's guest blog comes from Abena Patton, who is the Special Events and Web Manager at our Downers Grove Campus. She writes about one of her favorite campus events, the MWU Health Science Day for High School Students.
Midwestern University hosted the annual Health Sciences Career Day for High School Students on the Downers Grove Campus today. Two local high schools attended the hands-on workshop where students heard lectures on the Biomedical Sciences, Clinical Psychology, and Physician Assistant Studies programs, and participated in and demonstrated principles applied in the education of osteopathic physicians, pharmacists, physical therapists, and occupational therapists. Students were also given an overview of human anatomy, studying the abdomen, thorax, spinal column, and spinal cord. These demonstrations were given by current medical students.

In the pharmacy session, the high school students created hand sanitizers, carefully calculating, measuring, and pouring an array of colors and sparkle additives to make their solutions unique. In the physical therapy and occupational therapy sessions, the students were placed in real life scenarios of patients dealing with the physical impairments that life in a wheelchair might bring or the depth of therapy sessions needed to regain motion in a limb after a stroke. To end the day, the visiting students viewed osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) demonstrations performed by Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine fellows. Fellows are current medical students who apply for additional training in OMM.

Each year, Midwestern University continues to hold the Health Sciences Career Day for High School Students to provide an inside look at the programs the Downers Grove Campus offers and to provide an insightful look into the world of the health care professions.
