The past two weeks have been busy with major campus events, so I apologize for neglecting my blog. We recently hosted the 60th Annual Ward Perrin Clinical Refresher Course and CCOM Alumni Reunion Weekend in Chicago. Then, this past weekend was the Bright Lights, Shining Stars Gala at the Glendale Campus. Both events gave us opportunities to recognize important people at our University.

The Perrin Clinical Refresher Course provides CME programs for our DO and PA alumni each fall. The CCOM Alumni Association Board of Governors also meets and present awards to special alumni. This year's Distinguished Service Award went to Isabelle Chapello, D.O., Class of 1955. Dr. Chapello is a physician in Michigan who has dedicated her career to her patients and to advancing the osteopathic profession. She was instrumental in starting the National Osteopathic Women's Physician Association, an organization that continues today at our campuses. The University presented the prestigious OSTEE Award (Outstanding Service to Teaching and Educational Excellence) to John Karrat, D.O., a CCOM alum, faculty member, and former long-time director of the Family Medicine Residency. More than 50 guests attended the reception to celebrate Dr. Karrat's career and his commitment to teaching future generations of physicians. It was apparent from the remarks made by the physicians he has mentored that he is truly a special person and caring mentor. To conclude the day's festivities, a class reunion dinner was held for all graduating classes ending in 2's and 7's. The CCOM Class of 1957 was inducted into the Gold Medallion Club, to celebrate their 50 years of service to the profession. Louis Gierke, D.O., '57 spoke on behalf of his classmates in remembering their college days in Hyde Park (where CCOM was located until 1988) and commenting on how MWU has now become a prestigious university with a beautiful campus that continues to uphold the values of the founding school.

Back at the Glendale Campus, MWU welcomed nearly 500 guests to the annual Bright Lights, Shining Stars Gala. The evening is an opportunity for the University to thank the Glendale community for their support of our campus and also a way for the community to give back by contributing to our student scholarship funds. I have to go to quite a few fundraising dinners in my role, and I can honestly say that our event is truly fun and a great celebration. The evening includes a silent auction, dinner, awards program, and then dancing (or, in my case, listening) to a great swing band. This year Dr. Goeppinger honored Leland Peterson, CEO of Sun Health, with the Shooting Star Award for his leadership in the health care community, the business community, and his support of our academic programs. Mr. Peterson encouraged MWU to begin the Nurse Anesthesia Program and has been a great partner for us. Then, Dr. Goeppinger joined with Glendale Mayor Elaine Scruggs to present the COMET Award (Community Outreach: Motivating Excellence for Tomorrow) to William Toops, President of Pueblo Publishing and the Glendale Star newspaper. Mr. Toops was recognized for his service to the Glendale community through his involvement with the Chamber, Rotary, Glendale First, and many other community groups. He is clearly well-liked and well-respected in the community and was genuinely appreciative of the award. As a result of this event, MWU was able to award 9 students with "Spirit of Service" Scholarships. One student from each college gave their thanks to the guests, commenting on their dedication to community service and their desire to continue to serve others as health care providers.

Fall is a hectic, busy time on our campuses. These special events give us an opportunity to celebrate those who help to make MWU a special place--the alumni who have established our traditions and supported our mission for so many years; the community who has embraced us and supported our efforts; and the students who by their service are the best ambassadors for all of us.

I hope you are all enjoying the fall and Happy Halloween!
